2011 Ford Expedition
Expedition is quite simply the do-it-all full-size SUV. A standard 5.4L V8 delivers 310 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft. of torque – enough to pull up to 9,200 lbs. When the road goes from dry to filled with snow, ice or gravel, the available Control Trac® Four-Wheel-Drive (4WD) System helps provide more sure-footed traction. To help ensure your trips are comfortable, Expedition features an independent rear suspension. And then there’s the ultimate convenience feature you’ll appreciate when your arms are filled with bags of groceries – the available power lift gate.
V8 Power
The 5.4L V8 is engineered to put the torque where it's needed most – delivering 85 percent of peak torque at just 1,500 rpm. That’s important for pulling a big load from a dead stop. Multivalve technology (three valves per cylinder) allows the engine to breathe freely, increasing horsepower. The 5.4L engine generates 310 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft. of torque. All that power is transmitted to the drive wheels by way of a six-speed automatic transmission. Its wide six-gear spread helps the engine generate lots of low-end torque (for tasks such as towing) and provide efficient operation in sixth-gear overdrive on the highway. This engine is also flex-fuel capable, able to accommodate E85 fuel, gasoline or any mix of the two.
Big Towing Capacity
If you need to tow a large boat or camper-trailer, Expedition is the full-size SUV that fits the bill. The standard 5.4L V8 delivers 310 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft. of torque, giving the Expedition 4x2 regular-length model a maximum 9,200-lb. towing capacity when properly equipped with the available Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. (The Expedition EL has a maximum towing capacity of 8,900 pounds.) Expedition features standard trailer sway control. It works in conjunction with AdvanceTrac® with RSC (Roll Stability Control) to determine from the yaw motion of the vehicle if the trailer is swaying and takes measures — such as applying precise braking or reduced engine torque — to help bring both vehicle and trailer under control.
Control Trac® Four-Wheel-Drive (4WD) System
Whether the road is filled with snow, ice or gravel, the available Control Trac® Four-Wheel-Drive System helps provide sure-footed traction. It does so by dividing engine torque from front to rear. The system operates in four modes:
• 2H (2WD): Power is delivered to rear wheels only. For normal on-road, dry pavement driving.
• 4A (AUTO): In this mode, electronic control four-wheel-drive power is delivered to all four wheels, as required, for increased traction. For all on-road conditions, including dry road surfaces, wet pavement, snow or gravel.
• 4H (HIGH): This setting provides electronically locked four-wheel drive to front and rear wheels. Intended only for severe winter or off-road conditions, such as deep snow, ice or shallow sand. DO NOT use on dry pavement.
• 4L (LOW): When extra power at reduced speeds is required, this electronically locked four-wheel drive mode should be used. Used for off-road, low-speed operation or when extra power is required in situations such as climbing steep grades, going through deep sand or pulling a boat out of water. DO NOT use on dry pavement.
Independent Rear Suspension
Expedition delivers an exceptionally smooth and comfortable ride. That’s due in large part to the independent rear suspension (IRS) that allows each wheel to respond independently to rough or uneven surfaces for a smooth and controlled ride.
Power Liftgate
The 2011 Expedition offers an available power liftgate. A push of the button on your key fob or inside the cabin conveniently opens or closes the liftgate, allowing you to easily load up groceries, luggage or anything else.
